Type IV pili—a numbers game
نویسندگان
چکیده
Type IV pili are long polymers located on the surface of a wide variety of bacterial cells, including the pathogenNeisseria meningitidis. They are responsible for a diverse range of functions, including adhesion, motility and natural transformation. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Imhaus and Duménil show that two minor pilins, PilX and PilV, exert some of their effects by changing mean surface pilus number and that this modulates different pilus-dependent functions.

متن کاملThe number of Neisseria meningitidis type IV pili determines host cell interaction.
As mediators of adhesion, autoaggregation and bacteria-induced plasma membrane reorganization, type IV pili are at the heart of Neisseria meningitidis infection. Previous studies have proposed that two minor pilins, PilV and PilX, are displayed along the pilus structure and play a direct role in mediating these effects. In contrast with this hypothesis, combining imaging and biochemical approac...
متن کاملHost-parasite Interaction in the Rat Renal Pelvis
The initial interaction between bacteria and the renal pelvic epithelium may determine whether intrarenal infection occurs. A model of retrograde pyelonephritis was employed to study these events by electron microscopy. Female rats received an intravesicular inoculation of a 0.5-ml suspension of Proteus mirabilis containing 10(8) organisms. At intervals after inoculation, the kidneys were fixed...
متن کاملDNA binding: a novel function of Pseudomonas aeruginosa type IV pili.
The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces multifunctional, polar, filamentous appendages termed type IV pili. Type IV pili are involved in colonization during infection, twitching motility, biofilm formation, bacteriophage infection, and natural transformation. Electrostatic surface analysis of modeled pilus fibers generated from P. aeruginosa strain PAK, K122-4, and KB-7 pilin...
متن کاملNanoscale Adhesion Forces of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Type IV Pili
A variety of bacterial pathogens use nanoscale protein fibers called type IV pili to mediate cell adhesion, a primary step leading to infection. Currently, how these nanofibers respond to mechanical stimuli and how this response is used to control adhesion is poorly understood. Here, we use atomic force microscopy techniques to quantify the forces guiding the adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ...
